Lufthansa Ground Staff Wins Pay Rise Of 12.5% After Several Strikes

Lufthansa's ground staff will get average pay rises of 12.5 percent under a deal reached after a series of crippling strikes, the German airline giant said Thursday.

The carrier and union Verdi, which represents some 25,000 ground staff, finally reached an agreement Wednesday, averting the threat of fresh walkouts over the Easter break.

The 12.5-percent increase was in line with Verdi's demands, and will be implemented in two stages over two years.

Employees will also receive bonuses to help combat high inflation of 3,000 euros, and improvements in other areas including extra holiday pay and flexible working hours.

Several rounds of direct talks between Lufthansa and Verdi had failed, but they finally achieved a breakthrough after agreeing to outside arbitration.

"We fought hard for this compromise and we can now be very satisfied," Verdi negotiator Marvin Reschinsky said.

"We have achieved real increases in real wages, which will make up for the shortfall of recent years."

Verdi members still need to take part in a survey to decide whether they accept the deal, but the union has recommended they do so.

The ground staff walked out in early March and in February, on both occasions leading to almost Lufthansa's entire flight schedule being cancelled.

Lufthansa cabin crew, who went on strike at major airports earlier this month, have by contrast still not reached a pay deal with the carrier.

The group -- whose carriers include Lufthansa, Eurowings, Austrian, Swiss and Brussels Airlines -- had to be bailed out by the German government during the coronavirus pandemic.

But it has since bounced back strongly as travel has recovered, prompting unions to argue the airline is not passing on enough of its bumper earnings to its staff.

This week's deal brings some much-needed good news for employers in Europe's top economy, who have faced a tough season of wage negotiations as workers push for higher pay to offset inflation.

Rajasthan Royals registered their second victory of IPL 2024 as they defeated Delhi Capitals by 12 runs on Thursday in Jaipur. Asked to bat first, RR posted 185/5 in 20 overs with Riyan Parag playing a quick knock of 84* off 45 balls. Later, RR restricted DC at 13/5 , despite David Warner's 49-run knock. With this win, Sanju Samson and co have jumped to the second spot on the points table with a total of four points in two matches. RR's net run-rate is +0.800.

On the other hand, Delhi, who faced their second defeat of the season are yet to open their points tally and are stuck at the eight spot. Chennai Super Kings are currently leading the points table with four points and a net run-rate of +1.979.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings have taken the third, fourth, and the fifth place on the points table respectively.

Talking about the match, young Riyan Parag showed why he is considered a precocious talent as he struck a stunning 84 not out off 45 balls to set up a 12-run win for RR against DC in their IPL match in Jaipur on Thursday.

Sent in to bat, RR were reduced to 36 for 3 in the eighth over but the 22-year-old Parag single-handedly took the home side to 185 for 5 with a magnificent unbeaten knock studded with seven fours and six sixes.

Parag, who was promoted to number 4 by the team management this season and made 43 in the previous match, took 25 runs off veteran South African pacer Anrich Nortje with scores of 4, 4, 6, 4, 6, 1 in the final over to hit his highest T20 score.

Chasing 186 for a win, DC could only manage 173 for 5 in 20 overs though South African youngster Tristan Stubbs (44 not out off 23 balls) kept them in the hunt till the final over from which they needed 17 runs.

Avesh Khan conceded just four runs to help RR win their second consecutive match.

South African pacer Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal took two wickets apiece to also contribute in the RR win.

DC were reduced to 34 for 2 in the fourth over with Burger taking two wickets in three balls in a fine display of fast bowling.

Burger, who was brought in as Impact Sub for Shimron Hetmyer, dismissed opener Mitchell Marsh (23 off 12 balls) and Ricky Bhui (0) in the fourth over.

DC captain Rishabh Pant came out to bat at the fall of Bhui's wicket and along with senior batter David Warner built the innings without taking too much risk. Delhi were 89 for 2 at the halfway stage.

Warner was the more aggressive one as he got the boundaries to keep DC in the hunt. The senior Australian batter fell one run short of his fifty courtesy a brilliant diving catch by Sandeep Sharma off the bowling of Avesh in the 12th over.

Warner and Pant were involved in a crucial 67-run partnership for the third wicket.

Playing in his 100th IPL match and 14 months after a horrible car crash, Pant tried to build the innings with occasional boundaries. But he got out for a 26-ball 28 as Chahal induced a faint lower edge for Sanju Samson to do the rest behind the stumps in the 14th over.

The asking rate shot up to more than 13 runs an over and DC needed 66 from the last five overs.

Stubbs kept DC in the game with two consecutive sixes off Ravichandran Ashwin in the 17th over, but in the end the Delhi side were short by 12 runs.

They needed 34 runs from the final two overs which they could not get. It was DC's second consecutive loss.

Earlier, Parag shared 54 and 52 runs respectively with Ravichandran Ashwin (29) and Dhruv Jurel (20) after RR made a shaky start.

Royals captain Samson struck three consecutive boundaries in the fourth over bowled by pacer Mukesh Kumar before nicking a Khaleel Ahmed delivery two overs later to Pant to get out for 15.

RR were 30 for 2 by then as Mukesh had given DC their first breakthrough with the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal (5).

The Royals were in more trouble after wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav literally forced his captain Pant to take a review, which later proved to be successful, to dismiss Englishman Jos Buttler for an LBW decision.

Ashwin came out to bat at number five and he lofted a Kuldeep delivery for a six to help RR reach 58 for 3 at halfway stage. He gave Nortje even a harsher treatment with two sixes in the next over that yielded 15 runs.

Ashwin, however, holed out to Tristan Stubbs near the boundary ropes for a 19-ball 29.

Parag then made his presence felt, striking two boundaries and a six off Ahmed to take RR past 100 in the 15th over.

Mumbai Indians continue to miss their star batter Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently sidelined due to injury. Things have not gone well for MI in the absence of Suryakumar as they have lost their first two games in IPL 2024. Ahead of MI's second game, which was against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday, a fan pointed out how getting to face the Hardik Pandya-led side early in the tournament was good for SRH. "Important match today especially for SunRisers Hyderabad at home. Might be the best time to play Mumbai Indians this early. Players like Kishan look currently under cooked  for game time form & no Suryakumar Yadav yet , still  has ankle problem," wrote the user on X.

Suryakumar is yet to get fitness clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The world number 1 T20I batter Suryakumar has been stationed at the NCA in Bengaluru for his recovery and rehabilitation following a surgery for sports hernia. He has been out of action since December last year.

He had undergone a groin surgery in February. This was the second surgery he had in recent months after the one for an ankle injury.

"I want to thank everyone for their concerns and well wishes for my health, and I am happy to tell you all that I will be back very soon," he had said in a post on X after the surgery.

Suryakumar led the Indian T20I team for the three-match series in South Africa in Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya's absence. He scored 56 off 36 balls in the second T20I in Gqeberha and 100 off 56 balls in the third T20I in Johannesburg.

He was not part of India's ODI squad for the three-match series in South Africa. Yadav was also unavailable for selection for home series at home against Afghanistan due to injury.

They not just defeated Mumbai Indians by 31 runs, but did so after registering 277/3 in the first innings - the highest-ever IPL score. Three SRH batters smashed quickfire fifties as SRH made MI look an ordinary team. Travis Head, playing his first IPL game this season, blasted a 24-ball 62, while Abhishek Sharma slammed 63 off 23 to lay the foundation. Heinrich Klassen (80 not out) and Aiden Markram (42 not out) provided the late charge to take the hosts past the 250-mark. Earlier, Fifties from Heinrich Klassen, Abhishek Sharma, and Travis Head tore the Mumbai Indians (MI) bowling attack apart, as SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) registered the highest score in the history of IPL which is 277/3 in their 20 overs on Wednesday.

MI skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and asked the hosts, SRH, to bat first at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Openers Mayank Aggarwal and Travis Head came out to bat. Both the batters played attacking shots from the start of the innings. They built a partnership of 45 runs in just 4 overs before Mayank was dismissed on the first ball of the innings by Hardik. He was able to score 11 runs.

SRH completed their fifty in the 4.4 overs Head slammed a boundary on the bowling of Pandya.

After Mayank's dismissal, Abhishek Sharma came out to bat. He along with Head built a partnership of 68 runs from just 23 balls. Head was sent back to the pavilion after playing an outstanding knock of 62 runs in 24 balls which was laced with nine fours and three sixes in the innings.

The hosts touched the 100-run nark on the last ball of the seventh over as Abhishek smashed a six to leg-spinner Piyush Chawla.

After Head's wicket, former SRH skipper Aiden Markram came to support Abhishek. Both the batters played brilliantly and put on a partnership of 48 runs in just 19 balls before Abhishek was dismissed after playing a marvellous innings of 63 runs in just 23 balls with the help of seven maximums and three boundaries.

The Hyderabad franchise completed the 150-run mark on the second ball of the 11th over as the left-hand batter took a single on the bowling of Chawla.

"Palestinians Have Been Denied Their Homeland": S Jaishankar

In a strong statement on the Israel-Palestine issue, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that whatever the rights and wrongs in the whole conflict between Israel and Palestine, the underlying fact is that the Palestinians have been denied their rights and homeland.

He stated that what transpired on October 7 was a 'terrorist attack' but also acknowledged, in reference to the Israeli counteroffensive in Gaza, that every response must take into account something called international humanitarian law.

Mr Jaishankar, who is on a visit to Malaysia, was interacting with the Indian community during an event.

"How different pulls and pressures can be. On one hand, what happened on October 7 was terrorism. On the other hand, nobody would countenance the death of innocent civilians. Countries may be justified in their own minds in responding, but you cannot have a response that...every response must take into account something called international humanitarian law," Jaishankar said.

"The fact is whatever the rights and wrongs of the issue, there is underlying issue of the rights of the Palestinians and the fact that they have been denied their homeland," he added.

Hamas launched a horrific terror attack in Israel on October 7 killing more than 1200 people and holding more than 250 people as hostages, out of which over 100 are still in captivity.

In response, Israel launched a strong counteroffensive in the Gaza Strip targeting the Hamas units. However, the operation has also resulted in civilian casualties. According to Gaza ministry, more than 32,000 people have been killed in Gaza including women and children.

Notably, PM Modi was one of the first global leaders to condemn the horrific terror attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7.

However, India has also continued with its weight behind the 'two-state solution' to the long-running Israel-Palestine conflict.

Meanwhile, Mr Jaishankar is on an official visit to Malaysia, followed by his visits to Singapore and the Philippines.

Earlier in the day, he called on Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and expressed admiration for his vision aimed at fostering stronger ties between India and Malaysia. He also emphasised that this vision will serve as a catalyst for crafting a more ambitious agenda to advance the relationship between the two nations.

He also held a round-table meeting with CEOs in Malaysia and appreciated their growing interest in partnering with Indian industries.

"A productive round-table meeting with CEOs in Malaysia. Glad to hear about growing interest in partnering with Indian industries. Encouraged them to join in India's growth story. Discussed geopolitical developments that can provide more opportunities in business interactions," the EAM posted on X.

"Terrible Accident": Joe Biden On Baltimore Bridge Collapse

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday called the collapse of a Baltimore bridge a "terrible accident," and pledged to get the major East Coast port up and running as soon as possible after a cargo ship struck one of the span's support pylons.

Biden said he would send "all the federal resources" needed to handle the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. Six people -- all of them construction workers repairing the Francis Scott Key Bridge -- were missing, authorities said. 

"I'm directing my team to move heaven and earth to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge as soon as humanly possible," Biden said in a brief address from the White House, while acknowledging: "This is going to take some time."
