Accenture Secures $2.6 Billion Deal To Modernize Tax Agency IRS' Systems
An Accenture Plc unit said on Wednesday it had secured an up to $2.6 billion deal with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for modernizing the government tax agency's systems.
Accenture Federal Services said it had been awarded the contract for seven years, adding that it will have to compete for future orders to support the IRS with creating new ways for taxpayers and professionals to interact with the agency.
Earlier this month, the IRS said it would launch a free, government-provided direct tax filing option next year, which could result in the launch of a full-scale IRS filing system on par with private tax prepapers such as TurboTax-parent Intuit Inc.
Intuit on Tuesday forecast current-quarter profit below estimates as it prepares to tackle competition by investing in its products.
"This is really not a threat at all," Intuit CEO Sasan Goodrazi said alluding to IRS' exploratory study that 72% of American taxpayers surveyed were "very interested in" or "somewhat interested in" using a government tool to electronically file their tax returns.

Trump Rival Ron DeSantis To Launch White House Bid Today
Republican Ron DeSantis is to announce his hotly-anticipated challenge to Donald Trump for the party's 2024 White House nomination on Wednesday, touting his ultra-conservative record as governor of Florida as a blueprint for the nation.
DeSantis was to kick off his presidential bid during a live Twitter event with Elon Musk, the platform's mercurial owner, a source familiar with the plans told AFP.
"I will be interviewing Ron DeSantis and he has quite an announcement to make," Musk confirmed on Tuesday, promising the 6 pm (2200 GMT) event on Twitter spaces would be unscripted with "real time questions and answers."
"It's going to be live. Let it rip," Musk told a Wall Street Journal conference.
Long viewed as the most credible challenger to the twice-impeached Trump, DeSantis has used his platform as Florida's chief executive to burnish his conservative credentials, signing off on 80 new state laws this spring, many targeting "woke indoctrination" in schools and other public institutions.
They include a ban on the discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation in schools, a block on funding for efforts to promote diversity and inclusion at public universities and one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.
But the 44-year-old's official launch comes with his ratings in decline despite a slate of right-wing legislative wins in his state.
Lauded as "DeFUTURE" by The New York Post after a landslide reelection last November, DeSantis has seen expectations for a barnstorming campaign sweeping him into the Oval Office lowered in recent months.
A number of policy missteps -- both domestic and on the international stage -- have prompted disquiet about his readiness to take on the former president Trump, with donors worried he may have peaked too soon.
He faces the daunting task of closing an enormous polling gap, with Trump posting leads close to 40 percentage points, despite being indicted on felony financial charges and being found liable for sexual abuse in a New York civil trial.
- 'Positive alternative' -
But DeSantis goes into the campaign with a large cash advantage over his rivals in the pack chasing Trump -- a war chest of potentially more than $100 million -- and buoyed by strong turnout at a series of recent campaign events.
Never Back Down, a super PAC that has acted as the governor's de facto campaign arm before he announced, has a ground operation in most of the early nominating states and is making plans to expand.
Famously allergic to the mainstream media, DeSantis had been reaching out to the traditional national press and local reporters on campaign stops -- though he will be sidestepping the press by making his big announcement on social media with Musk.
Behind the scenes, the Trump and DeSantis camps have been jostling to secure political endorsements from state lawmakers while, at the national level, Florida's congressional delegation has broken heavily for Trump.
DeSantis has largely refrained from retaliating amid a near-daily barrage of attacks from Trump on his record, character and fitness for office, making clear that, for now at least, he would rather avoid a bitter fight with the former president's most ardent supporters.
DeSantis has also been criticized for lacking the personal touch that Trump's supporters say is one of the former president's biggest assets.
But the former naval officer and congressman has been redoubling his efforts more recently to stay behind after speaking engagements to press flesh, sign autographs and have his picture taken with supporters.
The father-of-three has also been sharing the spotlight with his wife, Casey DeSantis, deployed to take the edges off her husband's aloof, standoffish image by talking up his qualities as a family man.
DeSantis has spent months preparing the ground for his White House bid, criss-crossing the country to promote his memoir, "The Courage to be Free," and making multiple stops in states seen as influential in the Republican primary contest, including Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
"If we make 2024 a referendum on Joe Biden and his failures and we provide a positive alternative for the future of this country, Republicans will win across the board," DeSantis said during a visit this month to Sioux Center, Iowa.

Boris Johnson May Face Probe Again After Fresh 'Partygate' Claims: Report
Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson is facing further potential police investigations into the "Partygate" scandal, after a government ministry handed two police forces material about alleged Covid lockdown breaches it emerged Tuesday.
London's Metropolitan Police confirmed it was "assessing" new information it has received over the last week related to "potential breaches" of the coronavirus rules in Downing Street between June 2020 and May 2021.
Meanwhile The Times, which broke the story, said Thames Valley Police was also analysing new evidence related to possible rule-breaking at Chequers, the prime minister's country estate of outside London.
Multiple sources told the newspaper that the alleged breaches involved Johnson's family as well as his friends. A source close to the former leader denied this to the paper.
Johnson, 58, was ousted as prime minister last summer following a revolt within his ruling party after being dogged for months by the accusations of lockdown breaches and other scandals.
He repeatedly denied in parliament, and elsewhere, that he or his staff had breached his own pandemic era restrictions by holding boozy gatherings in Downing Street.
But the Met issued fines to dozens of aides after a criminal probe, and Johnson became the first serving UK prime minister found to have broken the law, over one of the gatherings.
The ex-leader is currently being investigated by a parliamentary committee over whether he lied to MPs about "Partygate", in a process that could ultimately trigger his removal as a lawmaker.
The spectre of new police probes follows the Cabinet Office, which supports prime ministers and ensures the effective running of government, passing the two forces new "information".
It "came to light" as the ministry prepares for a public inquiry into the country's pandemic response.
A Cabinet Office spokesperson said the material was identified "as part of the normal disclosure review of potentially relevant documents being undertaken by the legal team for inquiry witnesses".
"In-line with obligations in the Civil Service Code, this material has been passed to the relevant authorities and it is now a matter for them," the spokesperson added.
A spokesman for Johnson said: "Some abbreviated entries in Mr Johnson's official diary were queried by the Cabinet Office during preparation for the Covid inquiry."
He added the former leader's lawyers wrote to the Cabinet Office, and the parliamentary committee probing him, "explaining that the events were lawful and were not breaches of any Covid regulations".
His team told The Times that the referrals were "clearly politically motivated attempt to manufacture something out of nothing".

CSK Enter Record-Extending 10th IPL Final With 15-Run Win Over GT
Chennai Super Kings tamed a tenacious Gujarat Giants by 15 runs on a sticky surface to enter their 10th IPL final at Chepauk on Tuesday and extend their remarkable consistency in the tournament. CSK did well to reach 172 for 7 on a slow pitch in Qualifier 1 after Hardik Pandya opted to bowl. Considering the conditions, it turned out to be much more than a competitive total as Gujarat Titans had a rare off day to end with 157 all out in 20 overs. Rashid Khan made the CSK fans nervous with a 16-ball 30 towards the end but it was not enough for the Titans.
However, the defending champions will got another shot to make a second successive final in Qualifier 2 on Friday.
CSK's master tactician M S Dhoni made the best use of home advantage to take the four time champions to a 10th final in 14 editions. CSK did not take part in 2016 and 2017 editions.
Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (4-0-18-2) did the star turn for the Super Kings with a brilliant spell during which he strangled the opposition batters to avenge the defeat suffered in the tournament opener. Matheesha Pathirana, Maheesh Theekshana and Deepal Chahar also finished with two wickets each.
Chasing 173, GT lost Wriddhiman Saha (12) in the third over.
Skipper Hardik Pandya (8) could not make much impact at number three, miscuing a cut off Theekshana for Jadeja to pouch a catch at point.
Sri Lanka's limited overs teams' captain Dasun Shanaka (17) could not get going as well and his reverse sweep off Jadeja landed in the hands of Theekshana.
Jadeja made things tougher for GT by castling the dangerous David Miller (4) to leave the opposition at 88 for 4 in the 13th over. The Titans slipped further when Rahul Tewatia was bowled by Theekshana for 3.
Earlier, the Super Kings batters had a tough time on a slow pitch as they were not able to force the pace.
Dhoni lasted only 2 balls for his 1 run, much to the disappointment of an adoring Chepauk crowd.
For the home team, Ruturaj Gaikwad was the best batter, scoring a superb 60 off 44 while the others could not make a substantial contribution.
Pacer Mohammed Shami (2 for 28 in 4 overs) was the best bowler while Mohit Sharma (2/31) also picked up two wickets. Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed scalped a wicket each and put pressure on the batters in the middle overs.
Gaikwad had a stroke of luck when he was caught by Shubman Gill off Darshan Nalkande only for the delivery to be declared a no-ball. He capitalised on the let-off and played some superb shots. The very next ball after he got a reprieve, he smacked a six and hit a four from the next delivery.
The in-form Gaikwad did not get bogged down against the spin of Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed, the key bowlers for GT. He scored freely against all the bowlers and got CSK off to a brisk start with 49 being scored in the powerplay.
Gaikwad appeared to slow down after having outscored his opening partner Devon Conway with whom he shared yet another half-century stand. He fell trying to force the pace, to a catch by David Miller off Mohit Sharma. Ajinkya Rahane (17 off 10) hit one six before being Nalkande's only scalp as the scoring slowed down.
Conway was not his usual fluent self and struggled with his timing all though his innings.
Ambati Rayudu (17 off 9) crossed the 6,000 IPL-run mark during the course of his cameo.
The home team did well to collect 35 runs off the last three overs.

Sri Lanka Must Achieve Debt Restructuring By September: IMF
The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday reaffirmed that Sri Lanka must achieve its debt restructuring process by September, which is also the time for the global lender's formal review of the bailout facility it extended to the cash-strapped nation.
On March 20, IMF extended a nearly $3 billion bailout facility to debt-ridden Sri Lanka that would help stabilise the country's economy after it was jolted by a devastating economic crisis last year.
In a statement issued on Tuesday at the end of a nearly two weeks staff visit to Colombo to assess the progress made by Sri Lanka since the agreement was reached, the IMF said the two sides had discussed the developments on debt restructuring.
"Sri Lanka must achieve debt restructuring by its first review due in September. We also discussed progress on debt restructuring, noting the ongoing discussions with both foreign and domestic creditors," the statement read.
Sri Lanka is still struggling to normalise its crisis-hit economy after it declared its first-ever debt default in April last year.
On Monday, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka's debt restructuring programme will be completed by September and its bankrupt economy will be brought to a stable level. The IMF, however, wants to ensure that Sri Lanka fulfills its commitment.
"Achieving timely restructuring agreements with creditors in line with the programme targets by the time of the first review is essential to restoring debt sustainability".
During its two weeks of assessment, the IMF team was checking the progress made since the agreement was reached for the $3 billion bail-out facility over a period of four years.
They discussed recent macroeconomic and financial sector developments.
"Following strong policy efforts, the macroeconomic situation in Sri Lanka is showing tentative signs of improvement, with inflation moderating, the exchange rate stabilising, and the Central Bank rebuilding reserves buffers. However, the overall macroeconomic and policy environment remains challenging," the statement said.
"We welcome the authorities' ongoing efforts in meeting key commitments under the Fund-supported program. Performance under the program will be formally assessed in the context of the first review of the Extended Fund Facility arrangement, which is expected to be undertaken in September 2023," the statement further added.
According to official figures, Sri Lanka's total debt is $83.6 billion, of which foreign debt amounts to $42.6 billion and domestic debt amounts to $42 billion.
In April 2022, Sri Lanka declared its first-ever debt default, the worst economic crisis since its independence from Britain in 1948, triggered by forex shortages that sparked public protests.
Months-long street protests led to the ouster of the then-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa in mid-July. Rajapaksa had started the IMF negotiations after refusing to tap the global lender for support.

Chahar Attempts To Run Out Shankar At Non-Striker's End, Dhoni's Reacts
The high-profile IPL 2023 Qualifier 1 between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans could have been witness to a cheeky run out on Tuesday. After CSK had set GT a 173-run target, the defending champions lost quite a few wickets as Vijay Shankar came on to bat. On the second ball of the 14th over, CSK pacer Chahar attempted a run out at the non-striker's end with Shankar being the target. However, Shankar wasn't backing up. Though Chahar removed the bails, it resulted in nothing and even Dhoni could be seen smiling.

US Speaker McCarthy Says Debt Ceiling Talks 'Productive', But No Deal
A top US Republican on Monday said his first one-on-one talks in months with President Joe Biden to avert a calamitous debt default were "productive" but that there was still no deal.
The White House meeting came after Biden returned from a trip to Asia early to hammer out a deal ahead of the US Treasury's June 1 cut off date for Congress to authorize more borrowing.
"I felt we had a productive discussion. We don't have an agreement yet, but I did feel the discussion was productive in areas (where) we have differences of opinion," House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said after the talks.
McCarthy told reporters that negotiators were going to "work through the night" to move the sides closer and that he and Biden would "talk every day to try to find a way to get this done."
Debt limits are raised periodically to cover repayments on loans that have already been approved and spent, but House Republicans are insisting this time that averting a default must be paired with deep cuts to bring down the country's $31.8 trillion debt.
As they sat down for the meeting, Biden said "I am optimistic we are going to make some progress," adding both sides understood they have "a significant responsibility" to solve the impasse.
- 'Red line' -
The on-again, off-again discussions sputtered through the weekend, with McCarthy's team and White House negotiators meeting for more than two hours on Sunday night and another three on Monday.
Biden and McCarthy also spoke by phone Sunday as the president flew home from a G7 summit in Japan.
Republicans insist on spending less money in fiscal year 2024 than 2023, calling it a "red line."
The White House has offered a freeze for 2024 in exchange for Republicans supporting tax increases for corporations and wealthy Americans but McCarthy has rejected the idea.
The Biden administration has proposed limiting spending on some domestic programs but wants the Pentagon to share in the cuts.
Republicans have pushed for boosted military and border security spending, with major rollbacks to non-defense programs.
Disputes also remain over what a White House official characterized as increasingly hard-line Republican demands for beefed-up work requirements for social welfare programs.
Biden points out that Republicans raised the borrowing cap three times under his predecessor Donald Trump without threatening to default on the country's debt obligations.
If lawmakers fail to raise the borrowing cap, the government will careen into default for the first time in history, with potentially catastrophic results.
Many experts say that in a worst-case scenario global stock markets would melt down as the US economy lurches into a downwards spiral, killing millions of jobs.
- June 1 deadline -
The president is being pressured by progressives in his party to rely on the US Constitution's 14th Amendment -- which states that the validity of public debt "shall not be questioned" -- to bypass Congress and increase the limit on his own.
But he and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen cautioned that the courts would not be able to resolve any legal disputes quickly enough to meet the deadline.
Yellen sent a letter to Congress on Monday warning again that the United States could find itself unable to pay its bills as soon as June 1.
Even if McCarthy and Biden can hammer out a broad deal, anything they agree to will need to be shepherded through the House of Representatives, where they face pressure from hardliners on both sides not to make too many concessions.
Further complicating the timeline, the Senate is out this week, while the House is slated to be in recess Friday ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

Tim Scott, Only Black Republican In US Senate, Announces Presidential Bid
South Carolina Senator Tim Scott launched his bid to become the first Black Republican US president on Monday, vowing to fight for a return to the American way of life he said was under threat from Joe Biden's Democrats.
The 57-year-old brings an inspiring life story to the campaign, having risen from poverty in a single parent household to become one of the country's most influential conservatives.
"Joe Biden and the radical left are attacking every single rung of the ladder that helped me climb and that's why I'm announcing today that I'm running for president of the United States," he told cheering supporters in his hometown of North Charleston.
"You see, they're attacking our American values, our schools, our economy, and our security. But not on my watch. Not on my watch. That won't work. I can't stand by while this is done to America."
Scott has spent months crisscrossing the states considered crucial to gaining early momentum in the primary contest, underlining his Christian faith and his unique perspective as the only African American on the Republican side of the US Senate.
He joins a burgeoning field hoping to reel in frontrunner Donald Trump, but faces a daunting task matching the former president's national profile.
Recent polling shows Scott's support languishing under two percent -- an average of 54 points behind the former president.
Other candidates include Trump's first United Nations ambassador, Nikki Haley, ex-Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and talk radio host Larry Elder, the first African American to enter the race.
The most hotly-anticipated primary event so far, though, will be the official campaign announcement of Trump's biggest rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, expected on Wednesday.
The former president, who benefits from a crowded field that would split the anti-Trump vote, took to his social media platform to wish Scott luck -- while taking a swipe at DeSantis.
"It is rapidly loading up with lots of people, and Tim is a big step up from Ron DeSanctimonious, who is totally unelectable," Trump said.
Scott, who is considered one of the Senate's most formidable fundraisers, brings a war chest of around $22 million -- and the notable backing of Senate Republican number two John Thune, who called his friend the "real deal."
The former insurance salesman was expected to meet donors and then head to Iowa and New Hampshire, where he has already reserved $6 million worth of advertising.
"We live in the land where it is absolutely possible for a kid raised in poverty in a single parent household, in a small apartment, to one day serve in the People's House and maybe even the White House," Scott said.
"This is the greatest nation on God's green Earth."

Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos Engaged To Girlfriend Lauren Sanchez: Report
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez are now engaged, Page Six reported citing sources.
The couple are currently in France for the Cannes Film Festival where they have been attending the star-studded party circuit.
Rumours have been spreading for months that the couple is all set to tie the knot, mostly due to speculation about a massive heart-shaped ring Sanchez wore, as per Page Six.
Bezos and Lauren, a former broadcast journalist, started dating each other in 2018.
News broke that they were a couple in 2019, but the duo kept a low profile until his divorce from his wife of 25 years, MacKenzie Scott, was finalized, reported Page Six.
Bezos and MacKenzie share four children.
As per Page Six, MacKenzie received $38 billion in the divorce settlement, pledging half to charity. The settlement made her the third richest woman in the world with 25 per cent of the exes' joint stock in Amazon, though Bezos kept voting control over her nearly 20 million shares.
Sanchez, on the other hand, stated in November 2022 that she intends to follow in the footsteps of Blue Origin's founder and travel to space.
"It'll be a great group of females," she said of the trip's potential crew.
She was earlier married to Patrick Whitesell with whom she shares two kids, Ella and Evan. She also shares 22-year-old son Nikko with former NFL player Tony Gonzalez, reported Page Six.

TikTok Sues To Stop Ban In US State Of Montana
TikTok on Monday filed suit in US federal court to stop the state of Montana from implementing an overall ban on the video sharing app.
The unprecedented ban, set to start in 2024, violates the constitutionally protected right to free speech, TikTok argued in the suit.
"We believe our legal challenge will prevail based on an exceedingly strong set of precedents and facts," a TikTok spokesperson told AFP.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte signed the unprecedented prohibition into law on May 17.
Gianforte said on Twitter that he endorsed the ban in order to "protect Montanans' personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party."
"The state has enacted these extraordinary and unprecedented measures based on nothing more than unfounded speculation," TikTok contended in its lawsuit.
Five TikTok users last week filed a suit of their own, calling on a federal court to overturn Montana's ban on the app, arguing that it violates their free speech rights.
The state is trying to exercise national security power that only the federal government can wield and is violating free speech rights in the process, both suits filed against Montana argue.
TikTok called on the federal court to declare the Montana ban on its app unconstitutional and block the state from ever putting it into effect.
"Montana can no more ban its residents from viewing or posting to TikTok than it could ban the Wall Street Journal because of who owns it or the ideas it publishes," the lawsuit filed by TikTok users contends.
The app is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance and is accused by a wide swath of US politicians of being under the tutelage of the Chinese government and a tool of espionage by Beijing, something the company furiously denies.
Montana became the first US state to ban TikTok, with the law set to take effect next year as debate escalates over the impact and security of the popular video app.
The prohibition will serve as a legal test for a national ban of the platform, something that lawmakers in Washington are increasingly calling for.
The Montana ban makes it a violation each time "a user accesses TikTok, is offered the ability to access TikTok, or is offered the ability to download TikTok."
Each violation is punishable by a $10,000 fine every day it takes place.
Under the law, Apple and Google will have to remove TikTok from their app stores and companies will face possible daily fines.
The prohibition will take effect in 2024, but would be voided if TikTok is acquired by a company incorporated in a country not designated by the United States as a foreign adversary, the law reads.
The law is the latest skirmish in duels between TikTok and many western governments, with the app already banned on government devices in the United States, Canada and several countries in Europe.

Virat Kohli pulled off a string of records en-route his second successive century of the IPL 2023 against Gujarat Titans at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday night, but Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) failed to make it to the play-offs of the tournament as Titans opener Shubman Gill helped his side pull off a brilliant six-wicket win with five balls to spare, leaving the home supporters stunned. Gill not only matched Kohli shot for shot, he ended up with a better strike rate that was crucial to his team's near-perfect chase. He was ably supported by Vijay Shankar, who came in as an impact player and hammered 53 off 35 balls. His innings was laced with seven boundaries and a couple of sixes.
RCB's loss meant that Mumbai Indians (MI), who had earlier in the day beaten Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, moved into the plays-offs by virtue of finishing fourth on the table with 16 points. RCB, on the other hand, ended up finishing sixth in the tournament on 14 points behind Rajasthan Royals.
The Titans, who topped the table with 20 points will now play Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 on Tuesday while MI will lock horns with Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator a day later.
Former Australia pacer Brett Lee was all praise for Gill, saying on JioCinema: "He hit eight sixes. I love how he goes on the leg side. He finds power. That he can do and access because he's got strong wrists and he's got beautiful timing."
Gill and Shankar put on a century stand and Lee said: "123 off 71 balls, that was the partnership that broke the back of the RCB bowlers. Yes, it was a wet ball, conditions didn't really favour the bowlers but you got to give credit where credit is due. They both batted beautifully."
Speaking about Kohli's ton, former India Test captain Anil Kumble said on JioCinema: "You could see that passion and hunger. Today was an important innings for RCB, no other batsman was going well today. Faf du Plessis is a very good player but after he got out quick the pressure was on Virat Kohli. But with that pressure and responsibility he scored a great century."

Fake Image Of Explosion At Pentagon Briefly Goes Viral
A fake image of an explosion at the Pentagon briefly went viral and caused a ten-minute long dip on the markets on Monday, stoking further talk that generative AI could cause problems to society.
The image, which many observers suspected came from artificial intelligence, was spread by several accounts, forcing the Pentagon to comment that there was no such explosion.
A LOT OF PEOPLE POSTING ABOUT AN “ EXPLOSION NEAR THE PENTAGON”
— GURGAVIN (@gurgavin) May 22, 2023
THIS IS CLEARLY AN AI GENERATED PICTURE COME ON PEOPLE DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE pic.twitter.com/VShvtEE4sK
"We can confirm this was a false report and the Pentagon was not attacked today," a spokesman said.
The Arlington, Virginia fire department also reacted, posting on social media that there was no explosion or incident taking place at or near the Pentagon.
The incident followed other occurrences of fake imagery that also created buzz recently on the internet, including of former US president Donald Trump getting arrested and Pope Francis in a puffer jacket.
The earliest tweet found by AFP sharing the Pentagon image came from a QAnon-promoting account that has previously shared disinformation, though the original source of the image was not known.
Emerging generative AI technologies make it easier for non-specialists to create convincing images in just a few moments, instead of needing the expertise to use programs such as Photoshop.
The shared image caused the markets to be knocked for a few minutes, with the S&P 500 stumbling by 0.29 percent compared to its Friday close before recovering.
"There was a dip likely related to this fake news as the (trading) machines picked up on it, but I would submit that the scope of the decline did not match the seemingly bad nature of the fake news," said Pat O'Hare of Briefing.com.

Legal Action Against Imran Khan's Supporters For Violence Soon: Pak Army
Brushing aside the concerns of human rights groups, Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir has said that authorities have initiated a “legal process of trial” under stringent military laws against those involved in recent attacks on military installations following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan.
Gen Munir made the disclosure on Saturday during his visit to the Punjab province capital Lahore, the worst hit city by the violent protests.
According to a late-night statement by the Army, Gen Munir chief addressed the garrison officers and soldiers at the Corps Headquarters.
He said that the “legal process of trial against planners, instigators, abettors and perpetrators involved in the May 9 tragedy has commenced under the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secret Act as per existing and established legal procedures derived from the Constitution of Pakistan”.
On May 9, violent protests erupted after the arrest of Khan by paramilitary Rangers from the premises of the Islamabad High Court. His party workers vandalised a dozen military installations, including the Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander house), Mianwali airbase and the ISI building in Faisalabad. The Army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob for the first time.
Police put the death count in violent clashes to 10 while Khan's party claims 40 of its workers lost their lives in the firing by security personnel.
Thousands of Khan's supporters were arrested following the violence that the powerful Army described as a “dark day” in the history of the country.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Sunday that no new military courts were being established for trial of attackers on military installations.
Addressing the media in his home town of Sialkot, Asif said that such courts had been functional for the last 75 years.
"No new military courts are being established. Law is already present at this time. Courts are present and they have been working for the past 75 years continuously,” he said.
He also rejected the impression that the government was trying to snatch away the basic rights of people and said that cases would be pursued against individuals whose “footage, faces and identity is present that they are attacking military installations".
The minister also said that those convicted by the military courts would have the right to challenge the verdict in the high courts and then in the Supreme Court.
"I strictly do not differentiate between the attack that happened at the Corps Commander house, Mianwali air base, the GHQ (general headquarters), and the attack by India on this place (Sialkot memorial)," he said, pointing to the memorial.
Asif addressed the media after leading a rally in support of the country's armed forces.
On Sunday, General Munir also visited Jinnah House and other army installations blatantly attacked and vandalised by politically motivated rioters. He was also briefed on the events of May 9.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) emphasised that the armed forces draw strength from people and any effort to create a wedge between the Army and the people of Pakistan is an act against the state which is “neither tolerable nor condonable under any circumstances”, the army statement said.
"Hostile and inimical forces and their abettors have been trying hard to create confusion through fake news and propaganda but all such designs of the enemy will be defeated with the support of the nation,” he said.
General Munir also visited Qurban Lines and met with police officials and appreciated the professionalism and restraint exercised by them during the riots and vandalism, He assured the Army's full support to the law enforcement agencies for their capacity enhancement, intelligence sharing and training.

RCB vs GT: RCB's 6-Wicket Loss Helps MI Join GT, LSG, CSK In IPL 2023 Playoffs
Shubman Gill reaffirmed his status as Virat Kohli's heir apparent with a magnificent hundred as Gujarat Titans knocked Royal Challengers Bangalore out of IPL with a six-wicket win, allowing Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians to sneak through as the fourth team in the play-offs in Bengaluru on Sunday. After Kohli scored a 61-ball 101 in Royal Challengers Bangalore's 197 for five, it looked like the best effort on the day but Gill, who will be the torchbearer of Indian batting for the next 10 years, showed that he is better than the best. What Kohli did well, Gill did that better as his unbeaten 104 off 52 balls saw Titans chase down the target with elan. Like former India captain Kohli, this was Gill's second successive hundred.
Gill slammed eights sixes and five fours.
Titans thus finished the league engagements with 20 points while CSK ended second with 17 points ahead of Lucknow Super Giants due to better net run-rate. Mumbai Indians, after their eight-wicket win against SRH, were back in the last four with 16 points.
With 34 needed off three overs, Gill's short-arm half-jab, half-pull off Mohammed Siraj was the killer blow, and then he hit him for another six to kill the contest as Kohli knocked his head in disbelief in the dugout.
RCB had their fate in their own hands but poor execution while defending a healthy total became their undoing.
Gill was outstanding in his touch-play against pacers with that extra split second to play his shots while the regal footwork against leg-spinner Himanshu Sharma was a connoisseur's delight.
The pick-up flick behind square off Michael Bracewell's off-break was easily the shot of the night, which was followed by a monster hit over long-on.
Gill had an able ally in Vijay Shankar (53 off 35 balls). The duo added 123 runs for the second wicket as Gujarat Titans didn't let the intensity down for even one moment.
The difference between Gill's match-winning knock and Kohli's effort was the support at the other end. While Kohli was left to do all the heavy-lifting, Gill found support at the other end.
Also RCB had multiple weak links in their bowling unit and Gill very cleverly targeted the slow bowlers with leg-spinner Himanshu and off-spinner Bracewell in their four overs giving away 44 runs while 40 came off inexperienced Vijaykumar Vyshak's spell.
Earlier, Kohli was the lone ranger as his second successive century powered Royal Challengers Bangalore to a challenging total after being put into bat first.
With the rain gods threatening to spoil RCB's play-offs plans during the day, the match that started half an hour late saw Kohli bring back his 2016 avatar. He held all the aces during his knock that had 13 fours and a six.
His innings was priceless in the context that none of the other RCB batters could even reach 30 and just like the good old days, 'King Kohli' set the narrative by playing with line, length and minds of the bowlers.
This is his seventh IPL hundred and he has now surpassed Chris Gayle as the batter with highest number of tournament tons.
Considering that the Chinnaswamy Stadium is known for batting belters, the final total, though competitive enough, was certainly 10-15 runs below par.
Kohli and skipper Faf Du Plessis (28) got off to a rollicking start, with a flurry of boundaries against Mohammed Shami (1/39 in 4 overs) and the already distraught Yash Dayal in the powerplay.
They were dispatched for as many as nine boundaries which prompted Hardik Pandya to quickly press his main weapon, Rashid Khan (1/24 in 4 overs), into action to stem the flow of runs.
After conceding 62 runs in six powerplay overs, Rashid and his 'left-arm mirror image' Noor Ahmed (2/39 in 4 overs) put the brakes on the scoring.
Noor dismissed du Plessis while he tried to hit him inside in a freakish manner. The edge hit Wriddhiman Saha's pads and lobbed up for Rahul Tewatia to complete an easy catch.
Glenn Maxwell started off well but Rashid bowled one that was fast and full and just broke back enough to breach the defence of the batter as RCB suddenly found themselves in a rut.
It became worse when Noor dragged Mahipal Lomror with one that turned the other way and Saha completed a leg-side stumping with the finesse that is associated with him for years now.
Michael Bracewell (26), however, took some pressure off Kohli at the other end with Mohit Sharma's slower balls not working well on this occasion.
In his first three overs, he was hit for seven fours and it was Shami who got Bracewell before he could inflict more damage and Dayal had something finally going for him when Dinesh Karthik's woeful season got worse.
But Kohli continued to fight.

Rome's Iconic Trevi Fountain Water Turns Black In Climate Protest
Seven young activists protesting against climate change climbed into the Trevi Fountain in Rome on Sunday and poured diluted charcoal into the water to turn it black.
The protesters from the "Ultima Generazione" ("Last Generation") group held up banners saying "We won't pay for fossil (fuels)," and shouted "our country is dying".
Uniformed police waded into the water to take away the activists, with many tourists filming the stunt and a few of the onlookers shouting insults at the protesters, video footage showed.
In a statement, Ultima Generazione called for an end to public subsidies for fossil fuels and linked the protests to deadly floods in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna in recent days. The group said one in four houses in Italy are at risk from flooding.
Rome mayor Roberto Gualtieri condemned the protest, the latest in a series of acts targeting works of art in Italy.
"Enough of these absurd attacks on our artistic heritage," he wrote on Twitter.
The tradition is for visitors to toss coins into the famous 18th century Trevi Fountain to ensure that they will return to Rome one day.

Updated IPL Points Table, Orange, Purple Cap List After KKR vs LSG Match
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) survived Rinku Singh's onslaught to edge out Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by one run, and booked their place in the IPL 2023 playoffs. The win took LSG to 17 points from 14 league matches, while KKR's hopes of reaching the playoffs were dashed with this defeat. LSG remain in the third spot, three points ahead of fourth-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, their win was not enough to take them above CSK, who registered a big win over Delhi Capitals earlier on the day to secure their playoff spot.
Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the points table. GT will take on CSK in Qualifier 1, while LSG will face either RCB, RR or MI in Eliminator 1.
The final round of matches on Sunday will decide which team will take the final spot in the playoffs.

Orange Cap Standings:
Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Faf du Plessis has a firm grip over the Orange Cap, having scored 702 runs in 13 matches. RR's Yashasvi Jaiswal is second in the list with 625 runs in 14 matches.
Jaiswal is followed by CSK opening batter Devon Conway (585 runs in 14 matches) and Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill (576 runs in 13 matches). RCB stalwart Virat Kohli completes the top 5 with 538 runs in 13 matches.
Purple Cap Standings:
The Purple Cap standings are led by the Gujarat Titans duo of Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan. Both have 23 scalps each to their name in 13 matches apiece. Rajasthan Royals spinner Yuzvendra Chahal slots in at the No. 3 spot with 21 wickets in 14 matches.
Mumbai Indians' veteran spinner Piyush Chawla is sitting on 20 wickets from 13 matches. Completing the top 5 is KKR spinner Tushar Deshpande with 20 scalps in 14 matches.

IPL 2023: LSG Edge Out KKR By One Run To Seal IPL 2023 Playoff Berth
Lucknow Super Giants defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by one run in their final league game to qualify for the IPL play-offs at Eden Gardens on Saturday. Nicholas Pooran smashed a 30-ball 58 to take Lucknow Super Giants to a competitive 176 for eight after being sent in to bat. LSG lost wickets at regular intervals to reel at 73 for five in 10.1 overs before Pooran and Ayush Badoni shared 74 runs for the sixth wicket to lay the base for the total.
But then LSG witnessed another batting collapse to be restricted before Krishnappa Gowtham played a short little unbeaten 4-ball 11-run cameo to give LSG bowlers something to defend.
For KKR, Shardul Thakur (2/27), Sunil Narine (2/28) and Vaibhav Arora (2/30) scalped two wickets apiece.
Chasing, Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 67 off 33 balls while Jason Roy made 28-ball 45 up the order but it was not enough as KKR could manage 175 for seven.
Ravi Bishnoi (2/23) and Yash Thakur (2/31) picked up two wickets each for LSG.
Brief Scores: Lucknow Super Giants: 176 for 8 in 20 overs (Nicholas Pooran 58; Shardul Thakur 2/27, Sunil Narine 2/28, Vaibhav Arora 2/30) vs KKR. PTI SSC Kolkata Knight Riders: 175 for 7 in 20 overs (Rinku Singh 67 not out, Jason Roy 45; Ravi Bishnoi 2/33, Yash Thakur 2/31).

"Committed To Dialogue, Diplomacy": Quad Leaders On Resolving Ukraine War
The Quad leaders on Saturday called for the resolution of the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy while asserting that it must not be an era of war, a formulation that echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's position.
PM Modi, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese held talks on pressing global challenges including the Ukraine conflict at the annual Quad summit in Hiroshima.
After the summit, the leaders released a joint statement that touched upon the Ukraine conflict, the situation in the East and South China seas and their vision for the Indo-Pacific region.
The leaders said they stand for adherence to international law, peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for principles of the UN Charter, including territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states.
"In this context, today we express our deep concern over the war raging in Ukraine and mourn its terrible and tragic humanitarian consequences," the leaders said.
"We recognise its serious impacts on the global economic system including on food, fuel and energy security and critical supply chains. We will continue to render humanitarian assistance to Ukraine for its recovery," they said.
"Conscious that ours must not be an era of war, we remain committed to dialogue and diplomacy. We support a comprehensive, just and lasting peace consistent with the UN Charter," the statement said.
The Quad leaders also reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific that is inclusive and resilient.
We seek a region where no country dominates and no country is dominated, they said.
The Quad leaders also expressed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
We strongly oppose destabilising or unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion, they said, amidst the Chinese military's aggressive actions in the region.
The leaders also emphasised the importance of adherence to international law, particularly as reflected in the UN Convention on Law of the Seas.
The leaders said they remain fully resolved to uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific maritime domain.
They also unequivocally condemn terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms.

Pentagon Leaks Suspect To Remain Jailed Pending Trails: Judge
The US airman accused of leaking top-secret documents will remain in jail pending trial, a federal judge ruled Friday, after prosecutors argued that he posed an ongoing risk to American national security.
Jack Teixeira -- a 21-year-old Air National Guard IT specialist -- allegedly orchestrated the most damaging leak of US classified documents in a decade, posting a trove of highly sensitive information in an online chat forum.
The documents, which soon spread across the internet, pointed to US concern over Ukraine's military capacity against invading Russian forces and showed Washington had apparently spied on allies Israel and South Korea, among other sensitive details.
Prosecutors argued that Teixeira might still have access to classified documents and that "hostile" nations could aid his escape if he was released from prison, also saying he had a history of making "violent" statements.
Teixeira's defense team said their client no longer had access to such documents and that the government was exaggerating the threat he posed, arguing he should be released into his father's custody pending trial.
The airman was arrested last month following a week-long probe and charged with two counts that carry maximum prison sentences of 10 years and five years.

Hindu Leader Of Imran Khan's Party Quits, Condemns Violent Protests
Jai Parkash, a prominent Hindu leader and a minority member of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, resigned on Friday, making him the latest politician to quit the former prime minister's party following the May 9 attack on the country's military installations and government buildings.
Following the arrest of Imran Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party on May 9, violent protests broke out in several cities across the country during which several government properties were damaged.
Supporters of Imran Khan rushed in the Pakistan Army's General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and the Corps Commander House in Lahore was torched.
Jai Parkash was elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of the PTI party on a reserved seat for minorities in the 2018 general election.
Addressing the media on Friday, the PTI minority wing president condemned the protests on May 9 in the strongest terms, saying "Pakistan exists because of the army, and we exist because of Pakistan".
"I had no intention to leave the party till May 8," he was quoted as saying by Samaa TV, adding that he was quitting without any pressure.
On Monday, PTI's former Sindh governor Imran Ismail alleged that Jai Parkash was picked up from his residence by over "40 masked men".
Jai Parkash's resignation comes amid a spate of resignations of senior politicians from PTI.
Earlier on Friday, Mubeen Khilji, who held the post of a provincial minister in the PTI government also quit the former prime minister's party.
At a press conference, Mubeen Khilji said he was parting ways with the PTI on account of the May 9 violence.
"We wanted peaceful protests," he said, condemning the vandalism that took place in the aftermath of Imran Khan's arrest.
Police have put the death count in violent clashes to 10, while Imran Khan's party claims 40 of its workers lost their lives in the firing by security personnel.
On Monday, the top military brass vowed to bring the arsonists, who attacked the civil and military installations, to justice through trial under relevant laws of the country, including the Pakistan Army Act and Official Secrets Act.
Law enforcement agencies have arrested over 7,000 PTI workers across Pakistan, 4,000 of them from Punjab province.
Imran Khan, the 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, which he alleged was part of a US-led conspiracy targeting him because of his independent foreign policy decisions on Russia, China and Afghanistan.

Amid Retirement Buzz, CSK Coach's Honest Take On MS Dhoni's Future
Amid the buzz over Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni's retirement from the Indian Premier League, CSK's batting coach Mike Hussey has shed some light ahead of their clash against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In the pre-match conference, Hussey said that the only person who knows about Dhoni's retirement from IPL is MS himself.
"That is the thing we have not spoken about. Whether he is playing his last IPL or not only he knows. We have no idea. He is hitting sixes and finishing off games," Hussey said in the pre-match conference.
"From my point of view as a batting coach, he is still batting really well. He is still motivated to keep coming into the training and working on his game, he is hitting the ball well. We have seen him lighting up the innings and finish things off really well. He has still got that six-hitting ability. So, while he is enjoying it and still contributing to the team, then there is no reason why he cannot keep going, maybe for another 5 years (chuckles)... we do not know it is all up to MS," he added.
Dhoni has been one of the key reasons for the support CSK get in every match they play irrespective of the stadium. Even if he pops on the screen for a moment, his name starts to echo around the entire stadium.
Even CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja jokingly remarked that he keeps hearing people chanting skipper MS Dhoni's name and when he bats up the order, crowds wait for him to get out so that they can get to see the legendary wicketkeeper bat.
Hussey reflected on the support that CSK gets because of Dhoni.
"First of all the support we have got as a team because of MS is amazing. Not everybody gets that. It lifts you as a team and the support MS Dhoni has earned is incredible"
Throughout the IPL, Dhoni has played the role of a finisher for the last two or three balls. He has been troubled by a knee injury and he revealed that he asked his teammates to not make him run a lot after their victory against DC.

Russia Bans Barack Obama Among 500 Americans After US Imposes Sanctions
Russia on Friday said it banned entry to 500 Americans, including former president Barack Obama, in response to sanctions imposed by Washington.
"In response to the anti-Russian sanctions regularly imposed by the Biden administration... entry into the Russian Federation is closed for 500 Americans," the foreign ministry said, adding that Obama was among those on the list.
On Friday, the United States added hundreds more companies and individuals to its sanctions blacklist as it broadened efforts to choke off Russia's economy over the Ukraine offensive.
"Washington should have learned a long time ago that not a single hostile step against Russia will be left unanswered," the foreign ministry said.
Among those listed were television hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers.
CNN anchor Erin Burnett and MSNBC presenters Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough were also included.
Russia said it blacklisted senators, congressmen and members of think tanks "involved in the spread of Russophobic attitudes and fakes" and the heads of companies that "supply weapons to Ukraine."
In the same statement Russia said it had denied consular visit to detained US journalist Evan Gershkovich, arrested in March on claims of spying.
The refusal was triggered by a refusal from Washington to issue visas to journalists travelling to the United Nations with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in April.

US, Taiwan Conclude Trade Negotiations Amid China Tensions
The United States and Taiwan have concluded negotiations on a trade agreement to deepen economic ties amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing.
"This accomplishment represents an important step forward in strengthening the US-Taiwan economic relationship," US Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai said in a statement on Thursday.
The US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade looks to boost trade by streamlining customs checks, improving regulatory procedures, and establishing anticorruption measures between the United States and the self-governing island of Taiwan, which China has long-claimed as part of its territory.
While the United States and Taiwan do not have official diplomatic relations, they do maintain unofficial ties through the de facto US embassy in the country, the American Institute in Taiwan.
Beijing has in recent years stepped up its threats and rhetoric against Taiwan, increasing military drills in the seas around the island and working to cut off its official ties with countries around the world.
The issue prompts rare bipartisan agreement in the United States, with politicians including Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and his Democratic predecessor Nancy Pelosi both meeting publicly with the Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen over the last 12 months, drawing sharp criticism from China.
The first agreement under the initiative will allow American businesses "to bring more products to Taiwan and Taiwanese customers, while creating more transparent and streamlined regulatory procedures that can facilitate investment and economic opportunities in both markets, particularly for small- and medium-sized enterprises," the statement said.
The agreement, which still needs to be signed by the two sides, will "deepen the trading partnership and enhance US-Taiwan trade flows in order to promote innovation and inclusive economic growth for workers and businesses," USTR said.
"We look forward to continuing these negotiations and finalizing a robust and high-standard trade agreement that tackles pressing 21st century economic challenges," Tai said.

At G7 Summit, US To Unveil New Sanctions Targeting Russia Over Ukraine
The United States and the rest of the "Group of Seven" major economies will unveil new sanctions and export controls targeting Russia over its war against Ukraine, a U.S. official said ahead of a G7 summit in Japan.
G7 leaders are gathering in Hiroshima on Friday with the invasion of Ukraine, now in its second year, high on the agenda. The U.S. has spearheaded tough sanctions on Russian companies, banks and individuals, and the coming announcement is designed to reaffirm world powers' resolve to support Ukraine and squeeze Moscow.
A U.S. official, speaking to reporters on Thursday ahead of the gathering, said the G7's latest efforts were aimed at disrupting Russia's ability to get materials it needs for the battlefield, close loopholes used to evade sanctions, further reduce international reliance on Russian energy, and narrow Moscow's access to the international financial system.
"Our commitment to continue tightening the screws on Russia remains as strong as it was last year," the official said.
The United States and its allies, including the European Union and Britain, have continued to ratchet up sanctions and export-control pressure on Russia since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Thousands of targets hit with sanctions by Washington so far have included Russian President Vladimir Putin, the financial sector and oligarchs.
Washington over the past few months has cracked down on sanctions evasion with a heavy focus on dual-use items - those which have both commercial and military applications.
The latest U.S. sanctions package will include "extensively restricting categories of goods key to the battlefield" as well as preventing some 70 entities from Russia and third countries from receiving U.S. exports by adding them to the U.S. Commerce Department's blacklist.
In addition, the United States will announce some 300 new sanctions against individuals, entities, vessels and aircraft targeting "financial facilitators", Russia's future energy-extracting capabilities, and others across Europe, the Middle East and Asia helping to support the war.
U.S. sanctions authorities would also be expanded to more sectors of the Russian economy.
The U.S. official said Washington would take significant steps to align its actions closely with the EU and Britain to ensure that the G7 remained as coordinated as possible in response to "Russia's brutal actions".

IPL 2023: Virat Kohli, Faf Du Plessis Show Keep RCB In Play-Off Hunt
Virat Kohli conjured up a magical hundred to steal the thunder from Heinrich Klaasen's maiden IPL ton as Royal Challengers Bangalore stayed in contention for a play-off berth with a comprehensive eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday. Klaasen displayed his big-hitting prowess, slamming six sixes and eight fours during his scintillating 51-ball 104-run knock to lift SRH to 186 for five from 28 for 2 in the fifth over.
But Kohli (100) had other plans as he and du Plessis (71) helped RCB chase down the target with their magnificent ball-striking on way to a 172-run opening stand, the highest partnership of the season, as they romped home with four balls to spare.
Following the victory, RCB climbed to the fourth spot due to their better net run rate although they are tied with Mumbai Indians on 14 points. They will, however, have to win their next match to stay in the mix as Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants are at 15 points with one match to go.
Kohli was all class as he hit four maximums and 12 fours in his 63-ball knock, while du Plessis cracked seven fours and two sixes in his 47-ball knock as the two dished out a chasing masterclass.
Often criticised for slowing down post the powerplay, Kohli settled the debate with some extraordinary shots as he kept dealing in boundaries in the middle overs to never let the tempo slip.
Needing a win to stay in play-off contention, Kohli and du Plessis gave RCB a flying start to their chase. The in-form opening duo played some gorgeous shots, piling up 64 in the first six overs.
Kohli started the proceedings with two hits across the ropes off Bhuvneshwar Kumar, before slamming spinner Abhishek Sharma for two more boundaries.
The skipper then joined the party, punishing Kartik Tyagi for bowling short with three fours though he was dropped by Glenn Phillips in between at the boundary line.
Kohli then played an exquisite shot at deep extra cover for another four as 18 runs came off the fourth over.
Du Plessis next deposited Bhuvneshwar over deep square leg and followed it up with another four with RCB accumulating 14 runs off the over.
Knowing well that net run rate might come into play to decide the top four, Kohli and du Plessis kept their foot on the pedal with the former pulling debutant Nitish Reddy over deep mid.
Mayank Dagar pulled off an unbelievable catch at the boundary line but du Plessis survived after umpire called it a no-ball as Nitish was guilty of bowling a second bouncer.
After two quiet overs, du Plessis blasted Abhishek for a six and a four, before Bhuvneshwar came in the firing line, conceding four boundaries as the 15th over yielded 18 runs.
Kohli completed his hundred with another six off Bhuvneshwar before holing out in the next ball. Du Plessis followed suit with T Natarajan's slower delivery doing the trick.
Glenn Maxwell and Michael Bracewell then completed the job.
Earlier, Klaasen forged a 76-run partnership with Aiden Markram (18) before adding another 74 off 36 balls with Harry Brook (27 not out) to take SRH to a competitive total.
Already out of playoff race, SRH once again had a poor start with Rahul Tripathi (15) and Abhishek Sharma (11) frittering away good starts.
It was off-spinner Michael Bracewell who struck twice, removing both the openers in his first three balls. While Abhishek hit straight to Lomror at cover, Tripathi found the fine leg fielder off his slog paddle sweep.
Klaasen hammered three fours off Shahbaz Ahmed to power the Sunrisers to 49 for 2 in the powerplay.
Klassen rocked back and pulled every time the ball was short as Bracewell and Harshal Patel was sent across the ropes, while Karn Sharma was dispatched for a 74-metre six.
Karn Sharma was then punished for bowling over-pitched with Klaasen depositing him into the stands. The South African completed his fifty in 24 balls.
While Klaasen was in full flow, Markram managed just run-a-ball 18 before his off stump was pegged back by Shahbaz while he looked for a reverse hit.
Brook then picked up a four and six off Karn Sharma, who bled 21 runs, with Klaasen too lifting him over cover.
Du Plessis' decision to make Shahbaz bowl the 17th over backfired as Klaasen clobbered the first two balls over the bowler's head, while Brook sent one fine.
Parnell nailed the yorkers to concede just seven runs in the next over but Klaasen then plundered Harshal over his head to bring up his hundred. He was dismissed one ball latter while looking for another big shot. PTI ATK PDS ATK PDS PDS
