Thousands Gather To Celebrate New Year In China Amid Covid Surge

Thousands gathered in central Wuhan on Saturday night to count down to the start of what many hoped would be a much better year after a "tough" 2022 filled with lockdowns and in December a major new outbreak of the coronavirus.

Many released balloons into the sky when the clocks struck midnight, as per tradition in the central Chinese city where the pandemic began three years ago, before grabbing selfies with their friends.

"In the past year, I feel that COVID-19 was very serious and some of my family members have been hospitalised,” 17-year-old Wuhan high school student, surnamed Wang, told Reuters from the riverside shortly after midnight.

“I hope they will be healthy in the new year. This is the most important thing.”

Some came in fancy dress and almost everyone present wore masks as the country sees a wave of COVID which accelerated after curbs were dropped and which has since infected large swathes of the population with deaths now reaching an estimated 9000 a day according to UK-based health data firm Airfinity.

“I am afraid," said a lady surnamed Jin, referring to the possibility of being reinfected with COVID-19.

“I was still afraid when I came out tonight, but I just wanted to come out, because everyone has come out."

The crowds, including Jin, who were especially tightly packed in front of the old clock tower at Wuhan's Hankou Customs House, were watched by large numbers of police officers, SWAT, unidentified plain-clothed personnel, and other security workers. In late November hundreds of people took part in lockdown demonstrations on the streets of cities across the country including Wuhan. Following those protests, China all but abandoned its strict "zero COVID" policy of stringent curbs.

“Those restrictions were in place for too long, so perhaps people were pretty unhappy," said 24-year-old Wuhan resident surnamed Chen, who works in e-commerce. "It had been a long time since things were lively and vibrant."

Police used loudspeakers at a number of locations, blasting out a short message on a loop telling people not to gather, to which people appeared to take little or no notice.

People just wanted to have a nice time.

“I'm looking forward to the new year but I'm also very nervous," said Wuhan resident Lily Zhao, 37, who works as a kindergarten teacher. "I'm wondering when this epidemic will be completely over.“

In Shanghai, which like many Chinese cities in 2022 was put under a lengthy lockdown, many thronged the historic riverside walkway, the Bund.

"We've all travelled in from Chengdu to celebrate in Shanghai," said Da Dai, a 28-year-old digital media executive who was travelling with two friends. "We've already had COVID, so now feel it's safe to enjoy ourselves."While there were enough people on the Bund to warrant police directing the flow of those there, local F&B establishments were less busy than last year.

“It's not nearly as busy as it was last year,” said a waiter at Lost Heaven restaurant close to the Bund. Some tables were empty, which would not normally be the case on NYE he said, declining to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media. The restaurant had over 200 bookings, but typically has 20-30% more, he said.

“People have been afraid to come out since the COVID policy was loosened,” he said. “Hopefully it'll be better next year."

Here Are Some New Year Resolutions For 2023

New Year would mean starting afresh. You wake up on the first day of the year with a lot of enthusiasm. Well, do you also believe in New Year's resolutions? What does that mean?  People set some personal goals at the beginning of the year, and try to accomplish them. So, if you are planning on embracing some good habits and setting new goals, take a look at the list below. The pointers can help you decide on a resolution that you can follow in the new year.

Here are some New Year resolutions that you can make:

1)Exercise more

When the aim is to lead a healthy lifestyle, you automatically think of including a proper workout regime in your routine. This is also important because regular workout improves your mood and reduces stress that often tends to build up considering the workload and hectic lifestyle. The thought of exercising more in the coming year can be a great way to start afresh. You can set a proper timetable for yourself according to which, you will dedicate most of your time exercising.

2) Healthy eating habits

Now, this is another way to keep yourself in good health. So, make sure that you consume a balanced diet and savour other food items that are high in nutrition. The task can be easier if you avoid junk and processed foods and refrain from haphazard eating patterns (including midnight munching).

3) Time management

Now, this can be the toughest one. You may have a lot of pending assignments, or incomplete tasks from the previous year. So, now, it's time to realise that the cycle should not repeat. Focus more on yourself and your personal and professional growth. Set goals every week and try to accomplish every task on time.

4) Save money

Adverse situations and challenging times, including the pandemic, taught us the importance of savings. Life is unpredictable and you have to be prepared financially to face every situation that pops up. Managing your finances is a task and you should know how to do it properly. Start saving money if you haven't already. Reduce unnecessary expenses and start investing in things that are more important.

5) Quit a bad habit

You can make a resolution and promise yourself that you will not indulge in any of the aforementioned habits. Try to stay healthy and make yourself understand how these habits may affect your health. Not just drinking or smoking, you can also quit other habits that restrict you to become a better individual.

So, have you made a resolution for yourself already?

Ukraine Will Fight Russia Until Victory: Zelensky In New Year Address

Ukraine will fight the Russian invasion until victorious, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his New Year address Saturday, paying tribute to all those taking part in the war effort. "We fight and will continue to fight. For the sake of the main word: 'victory'," he said, as his country saw the old year out.

Hours after Ukraine suffered another wave of Russian missile attacks, Zelensky remained defiant in an emotional speech in which he heaped praise on all those people involved in the war in Ukraine.

"I want to say to all of you: Ukrainians, you are incredible! See what we have done and what we are doing!

"How our soldiers have been smashing this 'second army of the world' since the first days.

"How our people stopped their equipment and infantry columns...

"There are no small matters in a great war," Zelensky added.

"There are no unnecessary ones. Each of us is a fighter. Each of us is a front. Each of us is the basis of the defense.

"We fight as one team -- the whole country, all our regions. I admire you all. I want to thank every invincible region of Ukraine."

The latest wave of Russian missile strikes on Ukraine included several hits in Kyiv.

AFP journalists heard at least 11 loud blasts in the early afternoon, and the city's mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person had been killed as a result of the attacks.

City officials said several others had been wounded.

Israel Not Bound By "Despicable" UN Vote On Palestine: Benjamin Netanyahu

Israel condemned and the Palestinians welcomed on Saturday a United Nations General Assembly vote asking the International Court of Justice to provide an opinion on legal consequences of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories.

The Friday vote presents a challenge for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who this week took office at the head of a government which has set settlement expansion as a priority and which includes parties who want to annex West Bank land on which they are built.

"The Jewish people are not occupiers in their own land nor occupiers in our eternal capital Jerusalem and no UN resolution can distort that historical truth," Netanyahu said in a video message, adding that Israel was not bound by the "despicable decision."

Along with Gaza and East Jerusalem, the Palestinians seek the occupied West Bank for a state. Most countries consider Israel's settlements there illegal, a view Israel disputes citing historical and Biblical ties to the land.

The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) also known as the World Court, is the top UN court dealing with disputes between states. Its rulings are binding, though the ICJ has no power to enforce them.

The UN General Assembly asked the ICJ to give an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel's "occupation, settlement and annexation ... including measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem."

Members of Netanyahu's new government have pledged to bolster settlements with development plans, budgets and authorisation of dozens of outposts built without permits.

The cabinet includes newly created posts and restructured roles that grant some of those powers to pro-settler coalition partners, who ultimately aim to extend Israeli sovereignty to the West Bank.

Netanyahu, however, has given no indication of any imminent steps to annex the settlements, a move that would likely shake up its relations with Western and Arab allies alike.

The Palestinians welcomed the UN vote in which 87 members voted in favour of adopting the request; Israel, the United States and 24 other members voted against; and 53 abstained.

"The time has come for Israel to be a state subject to law, and to be held accountable for its ongoing crimes against our people," said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose Palestinian Authority has limited self-rule in the West Bank.

Basem Naim, an official with Hamas, the Islamist terror group that controls Gaza, said it was "an important step toward confining and isolating the state of occupation (Israel)."

North Korea Fires 4th Ballistic Missile Within 24 Hours: Report

North Korea fired a ballistic missile over the sea to the east of the Korean Peninsula in the early hours of Sunday, Yonhap news agency reported citing the South Korean military.

The move comes not even 24 hours after North Korea launched three ballistic missiles on Saturday.

The short-range ballistic missile was fired around 2:50 a.m. local time from Pyongyang, Yonhap said, citing South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The launch follows an unprecedented number of missile tests conducted by North Korea this year, as Pyongyang presses on with weapons development amid speculation it could test a nuclear weapon for a seventh time.

Romania Court Orders 30-Day Detention Of Misogynist Influencer Andrew Tate

A Romanian court on Friday ordered the 30-day-detention of controversial influencer Andrew Tate following his arrest for alleged human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal group.

Ramona Bolla, a spokeswoman for Romania's anti-organised crime and terrorism directorate (DIICOT), told AFP Friday that four suspects had been placed in pre-trial detention for 30 days following their arrest late Thursday.

They are former professional kickboxer Tate, who is a British-US national, his brother Tristan and two Romanian citizens.

Tate and his brother were initially detained for 24 hours, but prosecutors had asked a Bucharest court to extend the detention of all four suspects as part of their ongoing investigation.

Since the beginning of 2021, the prosecution has been investigating the suspects and had already searched Tate's villa in April.

The four suspects allegedly recruited and exploited women by coercing them into "forced labour... and pornographic acts with a view to producing and disseminating such material" online to "obtain substantial financial benefits".

Six potential victims have so far been identified.

Romanian police raided five locations across the country as part of their investigation.

- Twitter buzz -

The move came just days after Tate had a heated Twitter exchange with Swedish environmentalist Greta Thunberg, which internet users have speculated helped Romanian police to locate and arrest him.

Viral Twitter exchanges between Tate and Thunberg this week on subjects ranging from cars with "enormous emissions" to pizza boxes, fuelled speculation on social media.

Some internet users argued that the brand of pizza featured in a video posted by Tate in his angry exchanges with Thunberg had helped police confirm Tate's presence in Romania.

"This is what happens when you don't recycle your pizza boxes," Thunberg quipped on twitter following Tate's arrest.

But DIICOT spokeswoman Bolla told AFP earlier Friday that "it's not related".

"To determine whether a person is in the country or not, we use a whole range of means", she said, stressing that "arrest warrants and searches" had already been in place.

Greta Thunberg's spokesperson confirmed to AFP that her tweet this morning -- which has so far garnered about 2.4 million likes -- was in fact a "joke".

The Romanian authorities "have not been in touch with her", the spokesperson added.

Tate appeared on the Big Brother television show in 2016, but was removed after a video emerged showing him attacking a woman.

He moved to Romania several years ago with his brother.

Tate has been banned from many social media platforms for misogynistic remarks and hate speech, but was allowed back on Twitter after Elon Musk bought the company.

After Criticism, Chinese Officials Discuss Covid Situation With WHO

China's health officials on Friday discussed with the WHO experts on the current massive surge of the COVID virus in the country after the organisation's chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus asked Beijing to share more information and defended the decision of countries like India to screen travellers from the pandemic affected country.

The Chinese officials and World Health Organisation experts exchanged views on the current COVID-19 situation, treatment, and vaccinations, China's National Health Commission (NHC) said in a statement after the online meeting.

They agreed to continue technical exchanges to help end the epidemic worldwide as soon as possible, it said.

Millions of Chinese were infected in the current surge of Omicron variants in China, causing alarm over the world.

Earlier on Thursday, Tedros tweeted: "As I said at our most recent press conference -- in order to make a comprehensive risk assessment of the #COVID19 situation on the ground in #China, @WHO needs more detailed information." The WHO chief also defended various countries, including India, to take protective measures against people arriving from China to prevent the virus from spreading.

"In the absence of comprehensive information from China, it is understandable that countries around the world are acting in ways that they believe may protect their populations," he said.

"We remain concerned about the evolving situation and we continue encouraging China to track the Covid-19 virus and vaccinate the highest-risk people. We continue to offer our support for clinical care and protecting its health system," he said.

"We continue to call on China to share data and all hypotheses about this pandemic remain on the table," Tadros said, referring to the origin of the coronavirus which was first reported in Wuhan city of China in late 2019.

Tedros' remarks come against the backdrop of China criticising the countermeasures taken by various countries including the US, Japan and India requiring travellers from China to undergo the required tests.

Beijing's decision to lift all travel restrictions, including scrapping of quarantine for inbound travellers from January 8 ahead of Chinese New Year, has caused alarm around the world.

Millions of Chinese are expected to travel to various parts of the world for holiday during this period.

Asked about Tedros comments saying that the protective measures taken by various countries are understandable, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told media here on Friday that for all countries, COVID response measures need to be science-based and proportionate without affecting normal travel and people-to-people exchange and cooperation.

Over the past few days, authoritative medical experts from different countries have said that entry restrictions on travellers arriving from China are unnecessary.

"We need to underscore that since the start of COVID-19, China has been sharing relevant information and data in an open and transparent manner with the international community, including the WHO," he said.

China shared the genome sequence of the virus at the earliest opportunity, making important contributions to drug and vaccine research and development in countries around the world, he said.

"China's relevant departments have shared the genome data of the virus from the latest COVID cases in China via the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID). The departments will continue to closely monitor whether the virus would mutate, share information on COVID in a timely, open and transparent manner in accordance with the law, and work with the international community to address the COVID challenge", he said.

Chinese official media criticised the screening of travellers from China.

"A small number of countries and regions, such as the US and Japan see China's reopening as another chance to defame Beijing," a report in the state-run Global Times said.

"They have imposed travel restrictions on arrivals from China, citing what experts called 'unfounded' and 'discriminatory' measures to defend their moves, but the real intention is to sabotage China's three years of COVID-19 control efforts and attack the country's system", it said.

A negative Covid report will be a must for passengers arriving in India from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand from January 1, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Thursday.

"When My Mother Didn't Return...": Son Of Murdered Pakistani Hindu Woman

A 44-year-old Hindu woman was murdered and her body was found mutilated in a mustard field in Pakistan's Sindh's province, triggering fear and panic amongst the country's Hindu community, who held protests to voice their outrage over the brutal incident.

Krishna Kumari, a Hindu senator from Pakistan Peoples Party in Sindh province took to Twitter on Thursday to break the news of Daya Bheel, a Hindu widow's murder in Sinjhiro, a town in Sanghar district in Sindh province.

"Daya Bheel suddenly disappeared from agri field yesterday near Sinjhoro. Her dead body was found in a very bad condition in mustard field. Her head was separated from the body," Kumari tweeted.

Bheel's mutilated body was found on December 27, after her son Soomar went searching for her in the mustard field.

"What is agonising for us (family) is the manner in which she was killed," her son Soomar told PTI.

"When my mother didn't return, we went out to search for her and after hours of search we found her mutilated body in the field," he added.

She was survived by four children.

The incident has sparked an uproar amongst the Hindu community in the province, who staged protests in the Sanghar district demanding prompt police action.

Sindh police have formed a joint investigation team to probe the murder.

Hindus form the biggest minority community in Pakistan.

According to official estimates, 75 lakh Hindus live in the country.

The majority of Pakistan's Hindu population is settled in Sindh province where they share culture, traditions and language with Muslim residents.

Chinese Jet Came Within 20 Feet Of American Military Aircraft: US

A Chinese fighter jet flew dangerously within 20 feet (six meters) of a much larger US air force surveillance aircraft over the South China Sea, the US military said Thursday.

In the December 21 incident, a Chinese Navy J-11 fighter pilot "performed an unsafe maneuver during an intercept of a US Air Force RC-135 aircraft," the US Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement.

The Chinese pilot flew in front of and within 20 feet of the nose of the US aircraft, "forcing the RC-135 to take evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision," it said.

The RC-135, "was lawfully conducting routine operations over the South China Sea in international airspace," the US command said.

The incident came as China has sent increasingly large groups of warplanes out over the sea towards Taiwan in a show of force, as Beijing stiffens its claim of sovereignty over the US-backed, self-ruled island.

Last weekend, China flew 71 warplanes, including dozens of fighter jets, in military exercises around Taiwan, one of the largest such actions yet since Beijing started deploying military aircraft into Taiwan's air defence identification zone.

The People's Liberation Army said it had conducted a "strike drill" on Sunday in response to unspecified "provocations" and "collusion" between the United States and Taiwan.

According to an AFP database, there have been more than 1,700 such incursions so far this year, compared with 969 in 2021. Taiwan's defence ministry said it recorded around 380 incursions in 2020.

The United States has provided Taiwan with substantial military aid and advanced technologies to defend itself from any possible Chinese invasion.

Washington has also angered Beijing by refusing to accept its disputed claims to numerous small islands across the South China Sea, islands which are in waters claimed by other Southeast Asian countries.

Babar, Raza Among Nominees For ICC Men's ODI Cricketer Of 2022

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced nominees for the Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2022 award. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, Australia spinner Adam Zampa, Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza and West Indies' Shai Hope are the contenders to win the award. The ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2021 is in the running to do a repeat in 2022. Babar Azam once again showed his prowess in the 50-over format, showing once again why he has ruled the roost at the top of the ICC Men's ODI Player Rankings since July 2021.

The 29-year-old Pakistan skipper registered eight scores of more than fifty in nine matches this year, three of which he converted into hundreds. He finished the season with 679 runs at an astounding 84.87 average.

Adam Zampa continued to show why he has been a vital cog in the Australian white-ball setup, finishing the year as the highest wicket-taker for his country in ODI cricket.

The leggie had his joint-most productive year in ODI cricket, matching his debut year tally of 30 wickets. His feat was even more impressive this year because nine of his 12 matches were at home, where conditions aren't ideal for spinners.

The 30-year-old started the year with a four-wicket haul and finished with a couple more to cap off a fantastic 2022.

Zimbabwe's resurgence on the international stage in 2022 was largely due to one man - Sikandar Raza.

Raza scored 645 runs at an average of 49.61 and a strike rate of 87.16, adding two fifties to his three centuries. All of his runs came against top teams that were dominant in the white-ball game in 2022.

The 36-year-old scored three centuries, all while chasing, two of which resulted in victories and another nearly taking Zimbabwe over the line against India.

Shai Hope made his ODI debut in 2016, and since then, he has finished every year as the West Indies' leading ODI run-scorer. In 2022, Shai Hope was once again one of the West Indies' few shining stars in a difficult year.

Hope did not have the best of starts in 2022, but in typical fashion, began to grind out runs in the second half. He finished the year with 709 runs at an average of 35.45, including three hundreds and two fifties.

Caring With Covid: Infected Doctors In China Battle Virus Surge

Doctors working despite being infected, beds filled with dozens of elderly straining to breathe -- on the front lines of China's worst-ever Covid outbreak, hospitals are struggling.

Many Chinese were jubilant after Beijing announced the end of mandatory quarantines this week, effectively drawing the curtain on years of hardline virus controls that had isolated the world's most populous country.

But as China opens up, cases are surging. The healthcare system is straining and crematoriums are struggling to deal with the influx of bodies.

At Nankai Hospital in Tianjin, around 140 kilometres (90 miles) southeast of the capital Beijing, AFP on Wednesday saw more than two dozen mostly elderly patients lying on gurneys in public areas of the emergency department.

Most were hooked up to intravenous drips, and some appeared to be experiencing breathing difficulties. A few seemed to be unconscious or not fully responsive.

"Yes, they all have Covid," a doctor told AFP.

"The problem is that there aren't any beds at the moment," another doctor could be heard telling the guardian of a patient.

China's National Health Commission (NHC) last week said that it would no longer release an official daily Covid death count.

But with the end of mass testing -- and China's decision to reclassify Covid deaths in a move analysts said would dramatically downplay the fatalities -- those numbers were no longer believed to reflect reality.

A doctor in Tianjin said his emergency room was much busier than usual "because of the outbreak".

Medical staff are "pretty much all" expected to continue working despite testing positive for the virus, he added.

In the hospital's separate fever clinic, AFP saw doctors in hazmat suits attending to around 30 mostly elderly patients, some of whom were clutching printouts of CT scans.

"Try not to move too much," murmured a man to a groaning elderly woman on a gurney in an emergency department corridor, as patients and medical personnel streamed past.

- 'Four-hour wait' -

At the nearby Tianjin First Center Hospital, an AFP reporter saw at least one dead person being wheeled out of a ward.

AFP counted more than 25 patients of advanced age lying on makeshift beds in the emergency department's narrow corridors. Staff and carers were seen wheeling elderly patients in wheelchairs and on gurneys, trying to avoid bumping into others.

Many patients were attached to IV drips and several lay inert. Others shivered and coughed in face masks, woolly hats and thick blankets. Next to some gurneys sat bright blue oxygen tanks.

In a resuscitation room, an AFP reporter saw a group of doctors gathering around an intubated elderly patient attached to machines monitoring vital signs.

Security guards stood at the doors to some consultation rooms to ensure the long lines of patients remained orderly.

Hospital staff confirmed to AFP that the majority of emergency room patients were experiencing complications related to Covid.

In a corner next to the pharmacy window, a man used a cotton bud to dab water around the parched lips of an elderly woman on a gurney who was visibly struggling to breathe.

Several ambulances ferried more patients into the department through the afternoon.

"It's a four-hour wait to see a doctor," staff could be heard telling an elderly man who said he had Covid.

"There are 300 people in front of you."

AFP journalists have witnessed similar scenes at hospitals in other parts of the country, including Shanghai and Chongqing where hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of patients.

"Grandma, We've Been Hit": Russian Strikes Rattle Kyiv

Georgiy Yatsenko was hiding in the basement trying to comfort his anxious grandchildren on Thursday morning when an explosion rocked his normally sleepy street in southern Kyiv.

The blast blew out all his windows but the scene that greeted him when he stepped outside was even more frightening -- half a dozen houses almost completely destroyed by Russia's latest missile barrage targeting Ukraine.

"The main thing is that people are alive," he said as he watched excavators try to clear the resulting mess of bricks, wooden planks and power lines.

Ukrainian officials said air defence systems downed all 16 missiles that targeted Kyiv on Thursday -- part of a broader assault that also hit the second city Kharkiv in the east and the western city of Lviv on the border with Poland.

Multiple witnesses said the explosion on Yatsenko's street in Kyiv's southern Bortnychi neighbourhood was probably caused by a missile fragment, not a direct hit.

It made little difference to Tetiana Denysenko, who rushed to the scene after receiving a distressing call from her young granddaughter.

"She said, 'Grandma, our house is on fire. We've been hit. My mother (Denysenko's daughter) was thrown to the ground. She's lying unconscious,'" the 62-year-old recalled.

"That's all I could hear."

By the time Denysenko arrived, her daughter was being hauled off in an ambulance for emergency surgery.

"Thank God the children are alive," Denysenko said through tears. "Thank God my granddaughter only had an injured leg."

- 'We heard a bang' -

Sergiy, who lives in the same neighbourhood and gave only his first name, said that despite an air raid siren early on Thursday morning, he had spent a leisurely few hours having breakfast and walking his dog.

Once he heard reports of explosions elsewhere in Kyiv he decided to go to a local shelter for cover, but he and his wife had only reached their front door when the explosion occurred at around 9:00 am.

"We heard a bang, very strong, and there was a second explosion, but less powerful," the 59-year-old said.

"We went outdoors and saw the windows in our house were broken and the house opposite ours was destroyed."

He and his neighbours must now race to repair their houses as they prepare for the depths of winter amid persistent blackouts.

Close to half of Kyiv's population was left without power after the attacks on Thursday, as was 90 percent of Lviv, officials said.

Yatsenko said he planned to cover his window frames with plastic in an attempt to warm the house where he lives with nine other relatives.

It was unclear what the options would be for those whose houses suffered heavier damage.

At Denysenko's daughter's house, neighbours helped cart out salvageable items including a fridge but the elderly woman had no answer when asked where the family would go.

"I don't know," Denysenko said, sobbing. "I don't know."

Russia To Achieve Ukraine Goals Thanks To "Patience": Foreign Minister

Russia's foreign minister said Wednesday he was convinced that Moscow would achieve its goals in Ukraine thanks to its "patience" and "perseverance".

"I am convinced that thanks to our perseverance, patience and determination, we will defend the noble goals that are vital for our people and our country," Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov said in an interview broadcast on national television Wednesday.

He reiterated Moscow's stance that for talks to resume Kyiv should recognise the annexation by Russia of four Ukrainian regions.

"Our absolute priority is four new Russian regions," Lavrov said. "They should become free from the threat of Nazification that they have faced for many years."

Russia does not currently control the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in full, and Lavrov confirmed that was Moscow's ultimate goal.

Lavrov said that while Moscow wanted the conflict to be over, Russia would take its time to achieve its goals on the battlefield.

"We are in no hurry," he said.

"We would like to end this war as soon as possible, which the West was preparing and, as a result, unleashed against us through Ukraine," he added.

"We are a patient people. We will protect our compatriots, citizens and lands that have been Russian for centuries."

US To Impose Mandatory COVID-19 Tests For Travellers From China

The United States will impose mandatory COVID-19 tests on travelers from China, U.S. health officials said on Wednesday, joining India, Italy, Japan and Taiwan in taking new measures after Beijing's decision to lift stringent zero-COVID policies.

The officials told reporters that beginning on Jan. 5, all air passengers 2 years old and older will require a negative result from a test no more than two days before departure from China, Hong Kong or Macao.

Passengers who test positive more than 10 days before a flight can provide documentation of recovery in lieu of the negative test result, the federal officials said.

In an abrupt change of policy, China this month began dismantling the world's strictest COVID regime of lockdowns and extensive testing, putting its battered economy on course for a complete re-opening next year.

The lifting of restrictions, following widespread protests against them, means COVID is spreading largely unchecked and likely infecting millions of people a day, according to some international health experts.

Beijing has faced international criticism that its official COVID data and its tally of deaths are inconsistent with the scale of its outbreak.

Some global health experts have said the virus could infect as many as 1 million people per day, and international modeling groups have predicted China could experience 2 million deaths or more.

Earlier this week, U.S. officials cited "the lack of transparent data" from China, a persistent complaint from Washington about China's handling of the pandemic, as reason for considering its own travel restrictions.

The U.S. and Chinese approaches to battling COVID have been markedly different throughout the pandemic.

High infection rates in the United States early in the pandemic gave Beijing room to argue its model of strict COVID prevention measures had saved lives.

China has struggled to vaccinate its elderly population and has yet to authorize foreign mRNA vaccines. Its overall vaccination rate is above 90% but the rate for adults who have had booster shots drops to 57.9%, and to 42.3% for people aged 80 and older, according to Chinese government data last week.

The country has nine domestically-developed COVID vaccines approved for use, but none has been updated to target the highly infectious Omicron variant.

In June, the United States rescinded a 17-month-old requirement that people arriving in the country by air test negative for COVID-19. It still requires most non-U.S. citizens to be vaccinated against COVID to travel to the United States.

Japan Marks Record 415 Covid Deaths In Single Day

Japan on Wednesday recorded 415 COVID-19 deaths, the highest-ever count for a single day, health ministry data showed.

The country counted 216,219 newly confirmed coronavirus cases on Wednesday, up 4% from a week earlier, the data also showed, approaching the record high of some 260,000 a day in August.

In the past seven days, Japan had the world's largest confirmed COVID-19 infections and the second-most deaths after the United States, according to a tally by the World Health Organization.

UK First Lady Akshata Murty Offers Glimpse Into Life At 10 Downing Street

Akshata Murty, the Indian wife of Rishi Sunak, plans to make 10 Downing Street a more accessible place during her tenure as UK First Lady and has offered a peek into the official residence of the British Prime Minister, according to a magazine feature released on Wednesday.

The February issue of 'Tatler', which hits the stands next week, features Murty on its cover and profiles the former fashion designer and venture capitalist daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and author Sudha Murty.

In 'No. 10's Chatelaine: Inside the Secret World of Mrs. Sunak', it goes behind the scenes with those involved in the flat's refurbishment as well as close friends and associates who have been given Murty's go-ahead to share some details of life at one of the world's famous addresses.

"There will be a different vibe now," a friend tells the magazine, with reference to Murty's plans to move away from the more closed style of her predecessor - Boris Johnson's wife Carrie Johnson.

"Akshata is putting her stamp on that and is rolling out plans for more events and meetings. She wants to open up the staterooms as much as possible so that the public gets to understand the building's history and significance. She is keen to celebrate the stories of Britain through Downing Street - whether the visitors are heads of state or members of the public," the friend is quoted as saying.

Challis Interiors in Richmond, Yorkshire, was chosen by the Sunaks, both 42, after the work the upholsterers did on their constituency home in northern England.

They were drafted in to fix up the flat above No. 10 Downing Street when Rishi Sunak was still chancellor and the family of four - including daughters Krishna, 11, and Anoushka, 9 - used that as their home.

When Britain got its first Indian-origin Prime Minister in October, the family decided to move back into the same flat - in a break from the trend since the 1990s when prime ministers used the larger flat above No. 11 Downing Street as their residence.

The magazine notes: "If alarm bells are ringing, given the Johnsons' opulent refurbishment at No. 11 - and their record of finding inventive ways to fund it - rest assured, all of this was paid for by the Sunaks, at a very substantial, undisclosed cost.

"It's almost as if the ambitious chancellor guessed he might return to Downing Street one day." Murty is said to have commissioned exquisite fabrics for the flat, which is "far less glitz" than that associated with the Johnsons' now-infamous ostentatious redecoration "We made long, fully interlined curtains for all five windows overlooking the garden, hand-pleated and held back with heavy coordinating tassels in red, gold, and the ivory of the damask," interior designer John Challis tells the magazine.

"The ornate cornicing was hand-gilded, as it would have been originally, and a rug was commissioned to almost fill the room. Akshata was very involved and keen to see how things are made. She is also not afraid of getting stuck in and helping either," he said.

The profile, which pegs millionaire Murty as striking a balance between thrift and luxury, traces her flair for numbers to her school days at Baldwin Girls' High School in Bangalore and goes on to highlight her Ivy League education.

It adds: "Her final call was Stanford in 2004, for an MBA to gold-plate her CV. It was also where she met her future husband."
